Description
The crucifixion of Christ is embedded in a rocky base with a very graceful curvilinear silhouette. At the foot of the cross, on a small rectangular lawn base, stands the group of Maria sinking to her knees, impotent to faint, and John, supporting her from behind. The head-turning of John upwards creates the connection to Christ, who is fastened to the cross with four nails. Behind a cloud, the bust of the godfather with triangular radiant nimbus, scepter and globe appears above Christ at the intersection of the crossbeams. In front of the globe, nestling its outstretched wings against the curvature, hovers the dove of the Holy Spirit.
