André Weil was a Parisian art dealer with a Jewish background who had to disappear during the German occupation of France during the Second World War and only returned to his gallery after the end of the war. The period when André Weil owned the painting is not certain. In the post-war period, André Weil made no claim to the work (unlike other works).
