Description
KP00634A: Porcelain cup with painted coat of arms and saucer. The rim of the slightly bulbous cocoa cup has a wide gold rim on the inside. The plain handle with a narrow gold line is halfway up, at the bottom a dedication: "Franz Boldt s/r. l Johanne Boldt z. fr. Er. D. 28 Septbr. 1863 ". The large civic coat of arms covering one third of the cup shows 2 golden lions in a blue field, the 2 black fields are not definable. The cup has a light foot with a narrow gold rim. KP00634B: The high curved saucer has a narrow gold rim and a fine gold line in the inner round, both in a red-gold tone (washed out?).
Provenance
Acquired in 1939 from the art shop Emil Backhaus (1873-1955). Emil Backhaus had been working as an art and antiques dealer in Hanover since 1914 and moved into a residential and commercial building at Königstraße 12 in 1919. As a confidant of the customs investigation office, Backhaus checked Jewish removal goods with regard to cultural property and in some cases purchased goods himself that were excluded from being taken away. According to statements from the post-war period, from 1940 he maintained business relations in the occupied Netherlands, where his daughters moved in 1940, among others to the auction house van Marle & Bignell. From 1945, his business was under trustee administration because of his NSDAP membership.
