Description
Button framing of engraved ivory; inserted metal plate worked on both sides; shakudo with high relief, gold and silver inlay; on the front a temple guardian, a demon figure; everything is in highest excitement with him; open mouth; wild eyes; raised priest's club; standing with strongly accentuated nipples and navel dressed only with loincloth; reverse of the plate shows posts and wattle of the temple lattice; signed: Katsushika Chikokuku.

Acquired in 1908 by Herbert Ginsberg in Japan from the Vautier Collection; 1908 to 1942 Ostasiatica Collection Herbert Ginsberg, Berlin; confiscated by the SD in Rotterdam in 1942.
