Description
Benkei/heroic figure in the costume of a Yamabushi, the warlike monk sect of Hiyeizan, with ribbon-wrapped clean-shaven skull, the great sword at his side, carrying the huge bell on his back on the bell tree; the bell is in the shape of a chung, with stripes and sound warts; the bell eyes decorated with demon masks; signed.

Acquired in 1908 by Herbert Ginsberg in Japan; 1908 to 1942 Ostasiatica Collection Herbert Ginsberg, Berlin; confiscated by the SD in Rotterdam in 1942.
