Description
Saigyo/a pilgrim, his broad pilgrim's hat in front of him, sits on the ground and looks up to the top of the characteristically shaped mountain; at the edge of the piece, woodland is indicated by a stylised pine tree whose roots encroach on the back of the netsuke; signed.
Provenance
Acquired in 1908 by Herbert Ginsberg in Japan; 1908 to 1942 Ostasiatica Collection Herbert Ginsberg, Berlin; confiscated by the SD in Rotterdam in 1942.
