Description
Two marble reliefs (haut relief) with wooden frame:
1) Archimedes sets fire to the enemy (Roman) fleet with his burning mirror during the siege of Syracuse.
2) Aeneas paying homage to Dido (according to Weinmüller catalogue 32) or Antony with Cleopatra (according to the Collection-Stuart catalogue).
1 of 2 marble reliefs is signed BE, dated 65 → 1665, just below the burning mirror

Joseph M. Morpurgo Antiquitäten, Amsterdam, purchased by: unknown, 24.07.1933, Hfl. 198; withdrawn after 16.10.1941 (probably under administrator Jacques Jansen); December 1942, auctioned by Weinmüller, lot 829, buyer: (Konrad) Riggauer (Antiq., Lilienstr., Munich?); whereabouts unknown.
