Tasks

The Koordinierungsstelle Magdeburg is Germany’s central office for the documentation of lost cultural property. Its main task is to register and document search requests and found-object reports about cultural items taken from their owner(s) in connection with Nazi persecution or relocated as a result of the Second World War. Publication on the Internet makes it possible to search for these objects and the circumstances of their loss world-wide. In this way, the Koordinierunsstelle seeks to assist the locating and identification of these objects and to facilitate their return.

The documentation includes information on cultural items (a) taken from their rightful owners because of persecution under National Socialism or (b) which had to be sold under threat of repression or (c) which had to be left behind because the owners were forced to flee or compelled to emigrate. This also involves such cultural objects which today still evince gaps in their provenance such that an illegal dispossession between 1933 and 1945 cannot be ruled out.

In addition, the Koordinierungsstelle registers objects which were lost in connection as a direct consequence of the Second World War (such as confiscation, plunder, removal and relocation, expulsion).

Processing and publication of these reports is done in full agreement with the individuals and institutions which register them. In the case of a possible match, the Koordinierungsstelle makes every effort to bring those who have registered the loss into contact with those who have reported the finding of such an object.

Further, the Koordinierungsstelle serves as the administrative office for the Beratende Kommission im Zusammenhang mit der Rückgabe NS-verfolgungsbedingt entzogenen Kulturguts, insbesondere aus jüdischem Besitz (Advisory Commission on the return of cultural objects seized as a result of Nazi persecution, especially Jewish property). It has the task of preparation, implementation and follow-up for the meetings of the Advisory Commission. In addition, it serves as contact for individuals who wish to appeal to the Advisory Commission.
