Beschreibung
Object Name: Painting
Provenienz
Received through the Jewish Agency, Germany
JRSO Number: 21741/24
This painting belonged to Max Cassirer of Berlin, whose property was confiscated under the Nazi regime. In 1939 he left Germany, first for Switzerland and then for Britain.
The painting was shipped from the Central Collecting Point in Munich through the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization (JRSO) to the Bezalel National Museum (precursor of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem) in 1950. It was identified by Cassirer’s designated heir with the help of historian Marina Blumberg and the law office of von Trott zu Solz Lammek, following the discovery of a photograph that showed it hanging in Cassirer’s home.
In 2013 the painting was restituted, and the Israel Museum worked together with the designated heir to reacquire it for the Museum’s collection.
