In the plate inscribed on the lower left: "Arnold Böcklin pinx.", in the middle below "O. Felsing impr. / Die Burg am Meer / Verlag von Fritz Gurlitt in Berlin"; lower right: "Max Klinger rad. catalogue raisonné: Singer 328 X. Under passepartout.
Provenance
transferred in September 1943 by the OFP Hessen in Darmstadt to the Painting Gallery and the Museum of Antiquities of the City of Mainz, tax office identification number: M. St. 88/851. Probably confiscated by the Mainz tax office in September 1942 after the deportation of the owners. The identity of the owner (presumably a Mainz collector specializing in prints of the Berlin Secession and the 1920s) has not yet been clarified.
