Description
In the center, Phaëton falls from the sleigh pulled by four molds. Jupiter hurls lightning at him. Above the clouds are further gods represented: on the left Mercury with serpent and winged helmet, above Mars with helmet; there follows a figure which can not be accurately identified, in which it could be Apollo (since it bears a Lorbeerkranz); then Venus with Cupid, and finally Saturn, a bearded man with wings and a scythe. On the left the personification of the Po is depicted with empty amphorae and rudders, surrounded by Phaëton's sisters, the three Heliads. They lament the death of their brother. On the far right, Tellus, the personification of the earth, raises his hand to protect against the heat from his forehead. To the right is the atlas, which rises from a mountain, and carries the heavenly vault. The personification of the River Tiber (or of the Nile?) With a dried-out amphora lies on the right.
