Neder is one of the first folk painters and portraitist of the rural bourgeois milieus. Compared to the idyllic depiction of the rural population typical of the Biedermeier, he reproduces his motifs illusionless and brittle. The unforgiving lecture of his host-house scene is barren to any romanticizing or moralizing intention, and outlines its outward appearance in the painting of the time.
