Rocks near the grotto of the Loue
Green mountain river runs between a steep bank on the right and a washed-out limestone wall on the left. Green bushes above. Semi-cloudy sky. On the right a light green slope rises up to a ruined castle. In the spandrel a blue mountain ridge.

Backing protection. On the stretcher at the top left a stamp label with red border on it in red ink "de K. legit", above it in red bold chalk and crossed out in red LXXXIV, above it further to the right "d. K.", below the red bold chalk in white “645 x 84" [dimensions], above right in blue "B 364" [Bormann's invoice number], next to it also in blue and framed in blue ”1260", on the lower left vertical a halved 8-sided label with a green border on it handwritten in black ink "Courbet / Rots", below it label BSTGS "Inv. no. 12519" on the vertical centre strut label with printed “4117” underneath further on the sticker handwritten “Courbet / rot”, further down round yellow sticker on it "J. 1260" [Bormann inventory from Obersalzberg], on the right strut in blue “4815” [Munich number], bottom left: “PR” [Photo Roth], on the decorative frame multiple branding stamps “BSTG SLG”, two sealing wax circles at the top, on the left in blue a five-digit number “39[...]19” [the centre digit can only be a 1,4 or 7]. The frame may not be the original frame of the painting.
