Tapestry: Battle of the Granicus
Shown is the first victorious battle that Alexander the Great carried on on Asian ground. To the left in the background, the Macedonian army, partly mounted, partly on foot, with wielding arms and shields ading through the river, over the Granicus. In the middle of the composition is Alexander despicted, high to horse, armor and with feather-decorated helmet, riding over the enemies. In his back, his youthful friend Kleitos, with his bare hand and raised sword, defends a Persian with his weapon against Alexander. In the foreground, men battling out of the water or looking for cover behind tree stumps. Stamp '4050' (on the back of the linen). Result: The tapestry shows a series of old "restorations".
