Description

Between steep cliffs, the waters of a mountain stream gather and rush down over the cliffs in the foreground; gnarled oaks, some of them toppled, spread their roots over the rocks; the central body of water has attracted herons and geese; just as the blue mountains in the background, the water is illuminated by the sunshine coming in from the left; goats and ducks appear in the darker foreground, and numerous birds, including sparrowhawk, chaffinch, bullfinch, woodpecker, kingfisher, raven and dove, can be seen in the sky; on the left, in a cave enclosed by tree trunks, a hermit sits with a bible, talking to a wayfarer.
