Description
Signed and dated: „W. van Mieris F. 1726“; children playing in a vine-covered arched window; a beautiful oriental carpet hangs from the windowsill down over a relief showing playing cupids; a boy in a red jacket and beret leans on a birdcage and makes soap bubbles; behind him, there stands another boy with a bird; a little girl shows her doll a goldfinch, which is sitting in front of its house-like cage; a wooden horse and other toys are placed on the windowsill.
Provenance
According to Aldenhoven 247 und 248. purchased in 1818 for 2000 thalers; From the collection of duke August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (cf. 1826 inventory). [...]. Still in the museum in 1943 (catalog 1943, p. 175); current location: Pushkin Museum Moscow, object 1010174, no. ЭЖ-958 (40 x 33 cm); shown at the exhibition 'Kriegsbedingt verbrachte Kulturgüter' in spring 1995 in Moscow at the Pushkin Museum.
