Description
One of two Diana and stag automatons; the identical stags are gilded, except for the antlers; both carry a Diana made from silver, whose hair, bandeau and clothes are gilded; there are a hound and ten small animals - hares, lizards, frogs etc. made from silver - each on the gilded pedestals, which are also studded with silver ornaments; on one of the stags, the hind legs are riveted together and part of the saddlery on the hindquarters is missing; on the other stag, two antler points are broken off and the right front leg is damaged; on both pedestals, part of the silver fitting is missing; also, both figures lack their quiver and bow.
Provenance
Ring jousting prize won by duke John Ernest I of Saxe-Weimar in 1612 at the election day of emperor Matthias in Frankfurt on the Main (cf. 1656 inventory, Rathgeber 1835); first recorded at the Kunstkammer in 1656. […]. Currently in Swiss art trade.
