Description
Dutch canal in moonlight, Dutch gabled houses and riverside paths to the right and left accompany the canal, which runs from front to back through the centre of the picture and on which numerous sailing boats lie at anchor, a ferrying barge in the foreground; monogram lower right

Max Wassermann, 1941 confiscation by Devisenschutzkommando and handing over to Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg; handed over to Hermann Göring; given to the art dealer Goudstikker, Amsterdam as part of the exchange deal to obtain a Vermeer; July 12, 1944 sale Goudstikker to Dr. Hans Sikorski, Hamburg/Bad Kissingen; December 10, 1993 auction at Christie's, London, lot 229; whereabouts unknown.
