Description
Bust-length portrait facing left with dark grey, slightly staring eyes, short, black chin beard and brown hair trailing in long ringlets over his forehead and shoulders, wearing a black cap with an upturned rim and adorned with a gold medal that shows a pietà, a fur-lined gown of bluish black damask with a black fur collar, which he holds together with his left hand; on the chest, a small portion of a low-cut, pearl and gold-embroidered robe is visible; on the left forefinger he wears a ring with the Saxon coat of arms; his right hand, with the middle finger adorned with a ring, rests on the sill and holds a rosary; through the open window one can see a river with barges - probably the Elbe - and wooded hills; on the right, there is a beautifully carved cabinet door with rich iron mountings on the grey wall; the red colour on the face, neck and chest seems to be a bit corrupted, but less so on the hands, which are splendidly modelled; the depiction of the materials is masterful; the picture was painted hardly later than 1500.
Provenance
1935 exhibited in Oberlichtsaal 4 (cf. Gotha 1935) and May 31, 1935 in the register of nationally valuable art monuments (ThHStA Weimar , C 1624); 1943 transferred to Reinhardsbrunn (catalog 1943, p. 217); current location: Pushkin Museum Moscow, object 101076, no. ЭЖ-1070 (61 x 50 cm).
