Description
Cylindrical jug tapering towards the plain, circular foot divided by 9 grooves; a tall cylindrical neck above the shoulder which is divided into 8 panels; at the front of the body, on high relief strips, two griffins hold an oval medallion depicting a pelican with three chicks in its nest; at the back, there are two oval medallions with four divided escutcheons and foliage; a banner and the year 1599 at the top and bottom edge of the body; the pewter lid is attached to the bail handle and bears the letters "v. E."
Provenance
Purchased from the Spitzer auction, Paris, on May 18th 1893, catalogue no. 1642, for the sum of 300 francs.
