Description
One of the main attractions of Frankfurt Zoo was the young animal keeper Burkhart, who served as a model for Slevogt. One of his tasks was to bring the colourful Amazon birds, which he presented to visitors at the museum entrance, the so-called Parrot Avenue, back into the aviary shortly before the zoo closed. Collection Eduard Fuchs until 1933; 25.10.1933 confiscated by the Gestapo; on 16 and 17.06.1937 auctioned by Auktionshaus Rudolph Lepke, Berlin, catalogue 2114, p. 16, no. 136; purchased by an as yet unidentified art dealer (Kunsthandlung Friedrich Wilhelm Nickel, Nürnberg ? ) for 1000,- RM (estimated price: 700,- RM); purchased by Doebbecke and later by Stiftung Städtische Galerie Hannover (the painting was damaged by fire on 8/9 October 1943 and later - around 1954 - regenerated); 30 October 1956 auction Stuttgart Kunstkabinett, No. 319 (plate 28); since then Georg Schäfer Collection, Schweinfurt
