Katowice (Silesia), 1939
Thwaites worked for the British Foreign Service as Vice-Consul in Poland in 1939. He had to flee from the advancing German Wehrmacht and all his possessions remained in his private flat. The whereabouts of these possessions could not be traced after the war.
