Description
Statuette of St. Barbara, carved from boxwood; the figure has laid her right hand on the crenellations of the tower which stands next to her; her left arm is completely covered by her cloak; she turns her head to the left, away from the tower and the king; his lifeless eyes are deeply set into a haggard face; she stands, reposing and smiling contemplatively, facing the viewer; counterpart to K253.
Provenance
In 2000, the Schnütgen Museum in Cologne, which had acquired the sculptures from private ownership in 1970 without knowledge of the former provenance of the Gotha collection, returned them to the Schlossmuseum Gotha.
