Description
In the foreground is a nude model who has covered her pubic area and right thigh with a blanket. In the middle of the picture a stone (probably marble) with charcoal strokes, in which the sculptor has drawn the figure to some extent. The full-bearded sculptor now gives the model instructions on how to sit. Next to him is a journeyman who will do part of the bone work of knocking the model out of the stone" (UW); ref. Boerner in Leipzig, drawing from lot no. 934: "Max Slevogt: 16 Blatt Verschiedene Bleistiftstudien und –entwürfe: Figuren, Tiere, Kompositionen. Zum Teil signiert. Einige Blätter in Federtechnik, eine Zeichnung aquarelliert. 8° bis Kl.-Fol. Dabei datierte Blätter von 1898, 1900, 1901, 1903 und eine launische Postkarte an den Sammler vom „4. Oct.“ (1904). Gleichfalls von besonderem künstlerischen Interesse. Also of special artistic interest"; the entire set was purchased at auction by the artist Hans Beckers (for 140,- RM); since 1958 Leopold-Hoesch-Museum Museum / Papiermuseum Düren (Inv.Nr. 1958/2164/416); restitution negotiations in preparation
