Description
Signed with „R-L 1629“; bust-length portrait of a young man with full, curly hair, turning right; the light incides from the left, highlighting the cheek, the lower ear and the white shirt collar over the dark coat, and plays around the nose and lips; the rest of the head remains in a transparent chiaroscuro; black lines are put on and yellow lines are scratched into the dark hair; the background is dark grey, with a lighter tone on the left of the head.
Provenance
Acquired by duke Ernest II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1803 from the art dealer Johann Baptist Pfeiffer in Mainz; in the Kunstkammer before 1826 (cf. 1826 inventory). [...]. 1935 exhibited in the Ducal Museum (Room 12) and loaned to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam; May 31, 1935 in the list of nationally valuable art monuments (ThHStAWeimar, C 1624, fol. 68, 139); 1943 transfer to Reinhardsbrunn (catalog 1943, p. 139); according to a transcript of April 4, 1953 by Eberhard Schenk zu Schweinsberg. Transcript of April 28, 1953, brought to Coburg by Eberhard Schenk zu Schweinsberg by messenger at the beginning of 1946; current location: Alte Pinakothek Munich (No. 11427, according to Munich 1958, p. 82, "Acquired from the Herzoglich Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha'sche Familienstiftung").
