Description
The body of the lidded tankard is worked from a piece of narwhale tusk; the silver-gilt mount of the foot and cover are worked with convex and concave profiles; the edges of the foot and lip are connected with vertical strips; the thumb rest of the cover is palmette-shaped; a unicorn drinking from a tall footed bowl is engraved on the cover, with the inscription "Pello venuem procul" above it.
Provenance
Purchased before 1717 from duchess Auguste Dorothea of Schwarzburg-Arnstadt.
