Description
Frederick (*1563), John Casimir (*1564) and John Ernest (*1566), the sons of John Frederick II of Saxony (the Middle One), painted during and after the siege of Gotha in 1567; the two elder princes, wearing blackish blue suits with gold chains and daintily embroidered leather boots, stand hand in hand, with their hats removed, in a naturally graceful pose in front of a dark green curtain; the face of the elder one has been painted over; a nursemaid with strawberry blonde hair that is tied with a velvet band, wearing a light red dress with grey sleeves and a white apron, holds the youngest prince, who is dressed in a long sheer gauze shirt and stands on a wooden pedestal, stretching his leg wantonly; he holds an apple in his left hand and wears a tooth as an amulet on his chest; on the right, one views a room of the castle, where the duchess Elizabeth, dressed in black, is sitting with two lap dogs.
