Description
Signed and dated: „W. van Mieris f. 1726“; two girls stand in an arched window; a red Smyrna carpet hangs from the windowsill down over a relief (goat and child with mask); behind them, a boy stands with a red flag; a lot of toys lie on the windowsill, including knucklebones, small kitchen utensils and a puppet theater.
Provenance
According to Hofstede de Groot, the painting was sold to v. d. Bergh on April 20, 1816 at Dr. Luchtmans in Rotterdam (lot no. 98), together with the counterpart [Ahv 248]. According to Aldenhoven, the painting was acquired, together with no. 248, in 1818 for the sum of 2000 thalers; provenance note in the 1826 inventory: duke August. Still in the museum in 1943 (catalog 1943, p. 173); current location: Pushkin Museum Moscow, object: 1010175, number: ЭЖ-959 (40.8 x 32.8 cm).
