Description
High relief. Joseph, sitting on a cloud-bank, clothed in folds of ravens, holds with both hands the Jesus child, standing on his right hand on the world-globe. This blesses his right hand, and gently places the left hand on the supporting hand of Joseph. This delicate touch, as well as the slight inward rotation of the almost frontal child and the leaning of the body, illustrate the tender relationship between the boy Jesus and his father. The Angel Child is crowned with a wreath of roses, the angel's son, who appears as a half-figure behind Joseph, holds up the lily, a symbol of the chastity of Joseph. To the sides of the globe, an Angelputto hovers from a twisted Cornucopia and spikes over a monastery plan. The plan is unrolled by two standing or kneeling, non-winged putti, the standing putto pointing to the monastery church. The composition combines the heavenly group, inscribed in a rhombus standing on the top, with the terrestrial zone spread out in a horizontal strip.
