Description
A fullplastic figure group on a flat, approximately transversal rock base. From the viewer, on the right, sits, leaning against a thronet-like rock, a young, crowned woman, dressed in a long, girdle-gown robe. Her left hand placed her on her breast, the right hand raised in a gesture of surprise or defense. But her face, with the mouth slightly open, does not reveal any excitement. Opposite is a young man, characterized by wings at ankles and hat as mercury. He is naked, except for a cloak which falls over his left shoulder, the lapel of which he raises with his right hand, to expose his gaze to the great jug, which he holds with his left hand against his waist. Mercury is portrayed as a slender youth with almost girlish soft facial features and long curly hair.
Provenance
Possibly in the 17th century ducal collection in Modena. 1943 House for Ancient Art (Albert Loevenich), Cologne at GNM
