Sundial by Johann Joachim Ignaz von Aham (1655 - 1702)
Dial with numerals and scale, dedication to Johann Joachim Ignaz von Aham (canon of Passau, auxiliary bishop in Vienna, abbot of the monastery of Szoklos/Upper Hungary, today Slovakia) in the recessed segment. In the centre a motif of a forearm emerging from a cloud with a staff in his hand, to the right a galero with six tassels (abbot/bishop). Above the hand the opening for the hand. Below the dial a scenic depiction of a dragon-slaying bishop as the saviour of mankind (a ruler?) and conqueror of evil.
Signature (at the end of the dedication inscription): "F.I.Voglmair".
Purchased on 15 September 1944 from the Dorotheum auction house in Vienna, at the art auction of 15 Sept. 1944, cat. No. 139; purchased by Prof. Dr Bruno Grimschitz, Director of the Österreichische Galerie Wien, on behalf of the Museum der Stadt Regensburg.
Prior provenance at the Dorotheum remains unclear due to lack of sources.
