Description

A simply dressed man walks through the heath near the Harburg Hills on a path that leads through the slightly hilly landscape. On his back, the man is carrying a high basket loosely covered with a cloth; under his right arm he is holding a walking stick. The unpaved path leads the viewer's gaze far across the countryside to the villages of Altenwerder and Moorburg in the background, then across the southern Elbe and to the gates of Hamburg and Altona, whose church spires can be recognised on the horizon under the cloudy blue sky. Reverse: title and artist on upper frame, inv. no. below on frame.
