Description
Gotha estates tankard: this vessel was donated to duke Frederick I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg by the provincial estates of Gotha on the occasion of his return from France on March 15th, 1688; the gilded body of the vessel is decorated with the escutcheons of the Gotha estates - the counts of Schwarzburg and Hohenlohe, the cities of Gotha and Waltershausen, as well as of 12 noble families; their respective names are engraved below the escutcheons, a Latin dedication is engraved on the lip of the beaker and a motto is engraved on the spherical knob of the lid; cast silver ornaments in the shape of tulips, star flowers and leaves are applied to the surface above the ball feet and on the lid in such a way as to let the gilt background show through; marked with the Gotha hallmark as well as "AW" and "ICF".
