Description
Flat wooded area with a pond in the middle ground. In the foreground, a herd of cows grazing on a small plateau. On the left, a farmer filling a vessel with milk, which is being held by a young girl; on the right, a cowmaid milking a cow next to the dead trunk of a willow tree. Herons in the air.
See catalogue of the Baron Albert Oppenheim Collection, Cologne (1914), page 62, illustration 32. The catalogue notes: This painting appears to belong to a later period than the same depiction in the Pinakothek in Munich (No. 760). The Munich painting has been enlarged at the bottom so that the woman in the foreground is less close to the frame. The painting also shows one more animal. In the foreword to the Oppenheim catalogue, His Excellency W. v. Bode says of the painting: P. P. Rubens is represented with one of his large-scale landscapes. The Oppenheim catalogue also states: Perhaps identical to a painting from the Spruyt auction in Ghent in 1815 (Rooses, IV, p. 390). Gold frame
