Veduta of Rome

Listed in the Gardemeuble catalogue of paintings under Cap. IV 114 or 115; Listed in inventory no. 1 of 31 January 1920 as part of the 1924 settlement agreement between the Free State of Saxony and the former royal house, which were to go to the state as a room inventory marked in red. They belong to an ensemble consisting of 7 Canaletto paintings in total, five of which were to fall to the state (Cap. IV. 114- Rome, 115- Rome, 116- Rome, 117- Venice and 118- Venice). The five paintings that fell to the state continued to be part of the furnishings of the ‘Canaletto Room’ during its use as a museum from 1922 in the north wing (Room 526); ; On the salvage list of art objects of particular value, drawn up by the head of the revenue office Hugo Bahr, and the palace administrator Johannes Bibrach on 6 May 1942, ‘6 paintings’ are mentioned in the ‘Canaletto Room’. These are the five Canaletto vedutas and the painting ‘Bärenhatz im Großen Schlosshof in Dresden’ (Cap. VI. 66.), which has been in the room since its use by the museum. Two paintings with views of Venice and one painting with a view of Rome were initially brought to Pillnitz Palace along with a further 58 paintings. rom there, on 7 December 1943, it was taken to the relocation site, the manor house of the Rehnsdorf estate (now part of the town of Elstra in the district of Bautzen). In consideration of the situation, Gauleiter Martin Mutschmann ordered on 19 January 1945 that all relocation sites east of the Elbe be cleared and the salvage transferred to depots west of the Elbe. This also included the salvage from the Rehnsdorf manor. The transport of 61 paintings from Rehnsdorf to Schieritz Castle took place on 26 March 1945; according to the records, they were lost at the removal site.
