Provenance
[...]; undated latest June 1938 owned by Arthur and Irene Barasch, Berlin; undated probably sold to Franz Grossmann, Berlin [...]
On June 21, 1938, Philo Wuest appraised the painting belonging to Arthur and Irene Barsch, which was located in the study room of the villa at Wissmannstraße 11 (now Baraschstraße), at 60 RM. According to statements made by Luise Haertel, Arthur Barasch's secretary, during restitution proceedings, Barasch sold the items following the appraisal to cover, among other things, a foreign currency fine, legal and emigration costs, as well as living expenses. Based on Haertel's recollections, Franz Grossmann — who later acquired the entire property, including the villa — purchased the furnishings of the study room, which would have included the painting. The current whereabouts of the object remain unknown.
For further information on the possible ownership history from 1939 onward, see the search report “Realm of the Blessed” (Lost Art ID: 630531).
