Description
Signature lower left "Erler", on the reverse of the painting is a label of the Berlin Secession from 1904. In the catalogue of 1904 Erler's painting "Der Fechter" is listed under number 52. This motif was subsequently painted over with "Pierrot", hanging label on the reverse: "Erler - 'Pierrot' - von Akademie d. Künste - überwiesen 15.11.51", presumably original frame created by the artist.

1904 consigned by the artist to the 9th exhibition of the Berlin Secession as "Der Fechter"; until 1908 Fritz Erler, Munich; 1908 overpainting as a commissioned work for the 1908 carnival of the Neuer Verein, Munich ("Schwarzer Pierrot"); 1909 to at least 1910 Moderne Galerie, Munich (Heinrich Thannhauser); presumably 1952 transfer to the Nationalgalerie, Berlin; acquisition by the Akademie der Künste, Berlin
