Description
According to an entry in the entry book of the Göttingen City Museum, this is a bridal brooch of the Biedermeier period. The multi-coloured design and the floral ornaments are typical for this epoch. However, brooches from this period are not made of fabric, but rather of gold, silver or iron. It is possible that this was originally a belt buckle which was reworked into a brooch. Buckles were made from simpler materials
and the closure on the back is from modern times. The jewellery is handmade and reminds of the floral micro-mosaic brooches which were very popular in the 19th century.
Provenance
The Städtisches Museum Göttingen bought this brooch in August 1940 from the Göttingen dealer Wilhelm Hillebrecht together with four other objects for a total of 38 Reichsmark. According to the entry book, these objects came from a "Parisian old trade". The brooch has no ownership notes or stamps.
