Certificate of Appreciation to the legal advisor of the Jewish Community of Munich
Object Name: Document
Subject: Miscellaneous
Received through JCR (Jewish Cultural Reconstruction)
This Certificate of Appreciation was presented by the Jewish Community of Munich to its legal advisor, on the occasion of his silver wedding anniversary and in recognition of his 25 years of service to the Community, but contains no mention of his name.
It was received at the Bezalel National Museum (precursor of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem) from JCR (Jewish Cultural Reconstruction) in 1952.
In order to discover the identity of the unnamed legal advisor, the Israel Museum approached Bernhard Purin, the director of the Jewish Museum in Munich, for assistance. Based on his personal acquaintance, Purin identified a building pictured on the Certificate as the synagogue of a neighboring village, and this led him to the identity of the recipient: Dr. Avraham Ofner. Further investigation by Purin tracked down Ofner's heirs, living in the United States, and the Certificate was restituted to them from the Israel Museum in 2021.
