Description
Christ hangs on the cross with his arms stretched upwards and his head turned slightly to the right. In the background is the city of Jerusalem, on which a ray of sunlight falls through the clouds. On a ledge on the side behind the cross there are several persons, among them presumably a soldier with a lance. On the back remains of a label with the inscription "ICH HOFFMANN". The painting is shown in the photo album of the NSDAP photojournalist Heinrich Hoffmann (Bundesarchiv Koblenz, B 323/203) as no. 212.
Provenance
Until January 1943: Heinrich Hoffmann Collection, Munich. Of these, submitted to the auction of Hans W. Lange from 27 to 29 January 1943 as lot no. 65 together with 21 other paintings (cipher "70. München"). Acquired there by the director of the Bomann Museum.
