Description
Reverse, on the wedge on the right, pencil: Fire of Troy │ Hendrik van Ceve (?) │ Prof. Winkler, crosswise to it in red chalk, circles: Co [or Lot?] 1870. The note " Brand von Troja │ Hendrik van Ceve │ Prof. Winkler" refers with great certainty to an oral attribution of the picture to Hendrik van Cleve by Professor Friedrich Winkler (1888-1965), the former director of the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett.
Provenance
Acquired 1941 by Mr. Andreas Lorck-Schierning, a descendant of the artist. He in turn bought it only a few days earlier for the Flensburg collection from the art dealer Fritz Schleif, Berlin.
