Map „Oost-Frise, ou Le Comté d‘Embden subdivisé en ses principals Iurisdictions“ (East Frisia or the County of Emden, divided into six judicial districts)
This is a Dutch reprint of a French original by Pieter I. Mortier in Amsterdam probably made in 1696.
The map shows the area between Groningen in the west and Oldenburg in the east as well as between Wangerooge in the north and Bourtange in the south. The north-eastern part of East Frisia is shown distorted and shifted to the north. A grid is laid over the map, which gives a clear indication of Pieter I. Mortier as the author of the map, since Sanson and Jaillot, the authors of the original, had not laid out this grid. In a cartouche surrounded by scrollwork and decorated with the depictions of two peasant women, the left one holding a beehive and the right one a butter churn, the map title is found in the upper left: ""OOST-FRISE, ou / LE COMTÉ D'EMBDEN / subdivisé en ses principales Iurisdictions. / Par le S.r SANSON, Geographe Ordinaire du Roy. / A Paris. Chez H.IAILLOT joignant les grands Augustins, aux deux Globes, Auec Privilege du Roy, pour Vingt Ans.""
At the top right, in a cartouche held by two putti, three scales are indicated: ""1 Millum Pas Geometriques, ou Mille d'Italie / 1 Lieue Commune d'Allemagne / 1 Lieue d'Une Heure de Chemin"".
There are also several handwritten markings on the map:
- under the right cartouche in pencil: ""27 [in a circle]""
- on the upper right margin in ink: ""70.
- on the right margin of the sheet in pencil: ""around 1600"".
- on the upper left margin of the page in pencil: ""13 [...]"".
- on the left margin in pencil: ""22/24/""
- on the left margin of the sheet in pencil: ""27 [in a circle]"".
- on the left margin of the page in pencil: ""1692?
- on the left margin of the sheet in pencil: ""28 c [in a circle] / [...]""
The map is also yellowed, has significant water stains and heavily worn edges. There are missing parts at the centre fold and three horizontal creases through the map.
