Description
Group portrayal in a room, probably in a military hospital, on the left at the side a row of camp beds / flatbed can be seen dimly, on the right in the picture a larger group of men around a chair, on which a man sits with a pain-distorted face and in a white heightened hospital shirt, all men look at the doctor (? ) as he cuts off the leg with a saw/a large knife at calf level, behind the doctor stand many men with hats, watching with interest, on the right at the edge in the foreground stand two men in military uniform and another gentleman with a hat, coat and beard, who are also watching from a suitable distance, at the bottom left various severed limbs can be seen under a cloth.

Sold at the Gsell estate auction on 14.03.1872; possibly part of the auction of the Dr. M. Waldeck collection; auction at Amsler & Ruthard on 14 February 1887 and the following days, sold to "Lep"; auction at Rudolph Lepke's auction house, Berlin, on 14 March 1905, sold to "Greve"; probably during the war, at the latest since 9 July 1945 until today Lippische Landesbibliothek Detmold, initially handed over in trust by the British Military Government Detmold, since 20 July 1945 officially handed over for safekeeping.
