Description
The painting is a copy of the famous portrait of Napoleon painted by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) in 1812. Compared to the original, however, the copy shows the sitter reduced to the bust, against a neutral background and with softer facial features. Napoleon I is depicted in three-quarter profile and looks directly at the viewer. His body is turned slightly to the left and the sitter has pushed his right hand into his waistcoat in his typical gesture. The left side of his chest is decorated with medals. Letters are written in chalk on the frame: "D" (top) and "FR" (right).
