Regensburg from the north
View of the city in the evening light from across the Danube towards the south-west, depicted from Niedermünster in the east to St Oswald in the west. In the right half of the picture the wide Stone Bridge, cut off by the edge, with the cathedral dominating on the left. In the foreground an overgrown sandbank, in front of it a side arm with barges. On the bank on this side salt train with mounted drivers.
Signature (below right): "J.Alt 1826".
Purchased on 28 June 1940 from the Dorotheum auction house in Vienna thanks to the mediation of the Head of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts at the Provincial Cultural Administrator of Vienna on 15 June 1940.
Prior provenance at the Dorotheum remains unclear due to lack of sources.
Object originally comes from the Baron Moritz Königswarter collection in Vienna, auctioned on 9 May 1906.
