St John's Monastery on Klosterwall
In 1837, the new St John's Monastery was completed on the city rampart between Steintor and Deichtor, which is depicted in a picturesque landscape in the painting.
When looking at the painting, the eye first wanders over the moat, which appears like a large pond in the foreground, then up the Stadtwall to the monastery building. The neoclassical building presents itself with clear contours on the green rampart, which looks like an English landscape garden in the painting. Altmanns-Höhe is on the right-hand edge of the picture. Back: Remains of chalk inscriptions, illegible/faded, recognisable: "10" and ‘Ende’ (top), museum sticker at the bottom of the frame, "VIII" in white chalk in Roman numerals and inv. no. of the painting from the museum "1935,53" in red lettering.
