Description
According to the Greek legend, Eris, the goddess of discord, because she was not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, threw a golden apple with the inscription "the most beautiful" among the assembled goddesses. This led to a dispute between Juno (Hera), Minerva (Athene) and Venus (Aphrodite), whom Paris was to decide, and on which the Trojan War was kindled. The Paris of this group, which is usually reproduced sitting, has not been preserved, but Venus has already given the controversy which the latter holds in his left hand. The master of these forms of the gods, who equally shines in the depiction of the figures as in the rendering of the robe and accessories, clearly shows Flemish training. (Venus looking at Paris ... with body ... before her, raised the rights, wrapped her cloak with her left hand, which falls backwards on a carrier carried over her naked shoulder Cloak and over the left arm a long braid ... balancing down from the hairstyle placed in braid and wreath to the neck.) In the left of the apple.)
