Description
Winter landscape with a river in the middle of the picture, on whose banks two messengers anchor. On both banks of the river there are trees and higher buildings. On the right bank in the foreground of the picture there is a path along which several people can be seen, some with bundles of wood under their arms. Signed at lower right. The signature of Jacques Fouquières (1585-1659) was covered by a forged signature of Frans de Momper (1603-1660) until its restoration in 1995. On the reverse, next to an old (147) and the new inventory number, there is an inscription in pencil ("Lange") on the right-hand side of the decorative frame. The canvas contains an unclear stamp.
Provenance
Before 1944 in unknown possession, probably in France. 1944 in the possession of the art dealer Cornelius Postma (Paris). Sold by this in July 1944 to Hans W. Lange, who in turn sold it in August 1944 for 10,000 RM to the Bomann Museum and the city of Celle. At the same time, Lange sold a work from the Adolphe Schloss collection to Celle. Both paintings probably arrived in Germany with one of the last art transports before the liberation of Paris.
