Maximilian Speck von Sternburg Stiftung im Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig
About the institution
The former collection of the merchant Maximilian Speck von Sternburg (1776-1856) was bequeathed to the Leipzig City Museum in 1852 and was eventually expropriated during the land reform of 1945. In 1989, the heirs got the collection back and transferred it to the “Maximilian Speck von Sternburg Foundation in the Museum of Fine Arts” in 1996. Today, the foundation comprises 202 paintings, 127 drawings, 645 prints, as well as archival materials and an art library. Several works listed in the catalogs of the collection created before 1945 are now missing.
