Description
Beaker made from horn, dyed dark red; lid, fitting and foot made from gilded silver and decorated with hunting scenes in low relief, which were possibly enamelled in various colours, originally; the figural handle is made from gilded silver in the shape of a hunter blowing a horn; there are inscriptions on the upper edge of the beaker: "TRINCK † VNT † IS † GOT † NIT † VERGIS † 1594" and above the foot: "WELCHER DIS HORN RECHT BLASEN WILL : MVS AVS TRINCKEN DER BECHER VIEL"; maker's mark on the underside of the foot.
Provenance
According to the 1717 (and following) inventory, the beaker used to belong to Frederick William I of Saxe-Weimar-Altenburg, administrator of the Electorate of Saxony.
